Why so few non western society people living in cars?
I have noticed this subreddit mainly has posts from people in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a few from the UK and Europe. I've not seen any posts from Africa, Asia, South or Central America or other Pacific Island nations.
Having travelled a fair bit, most developing nations have stronger family ties, so when you fall on hard times you depend on your family and extended family to help you out. Also, in most developing countries, they own their homes. Sure they are simple, small, and lack the mod cons western society tends to take for granted, but they usually own them. I have a friend in a Pacific Island nation who brought her land for $5000 (about $2500 US) and probably spent less than $10000 ($5000 US) on the house. I helped out with some money for the outer sheet metal walls and other stuff. The house is small, about 8 by 7 metres. It has a single bed room, a kitchen area and toilet. No electricity yet, and only cold running water. They build more as they get the money.
Also, cars are relativly expensive in developing countries. You can build a basic house cheaply, but a car will cost far more than a basic house. Also the second hand market in developing countries isn't like what it is in developed countries, so the availability of second hand cars tends to be low, and they still cost more than a cheap house.
In developed nations lad is expensive, houses are expensive, the cost of living is expensive. Also the family and extended family is less important. So you can end up as an individual being priced out of housing. With no support network to depend on, you have to make do with what you have, and the income you have. Thus we get people living in cars. Of course, there are people who choose to live in cars for the freedom and being able to travel, but I think we can agree most people don't do it by choice.
What do people think about this? I'm not sure my theory is correct. I'm interested in other people's ideas on this.
