Is a carbon gravel bike a bad idea for the Vermont Overland?

I’m signed up for the Vermont Overland next year and trying to figure out whether a carbon frame gravel bike (Trek Checkpoint) is a good idea for this event. I know VO has a mix of steep climbs, fast descents, and rough Class 4 roads, so I want something that feels stable and durable for a long day out.

For context:

  • I’m 6'2" and about 205 lbs
  • I currently ride with a Redshift ShockStop suspension stem, which has helped with comfort on chunky stuff

For anyone who has done VO before:

• What frame material did you ride (carbon, aluminum, steel, Ti)?
• How did your setup handle the Class 4 sections?
• Any issues with durability or feeling underbiked, especially on carbon?
• If you rode carbon, did you ever wish you had something more compliant or more “bombproof”?

I’m not trying to podium — just want a comfortable, confidence-inspiring bike that won’t get rattled to death. Most brands say carbon is totally fine for events like this, but I’d love to hear real experiences from riders who’ve been there.

Thanks!
