Anyone else secretly tracking "PhD progress" like a weird little video game
Hi all, I know this sub is super tiny right now and the activity is almost non existent, but that actually makes it feel like a quiet corner of the internet where I can say this without getting roasted. I am a third year PhD student in social sciences and the only way I have managed not to drown this semester is by turning my thesis into a kind of private video game. I have a ridiculous Notion board where every tiny thing gets a point, one point for reading a paper, two for writing a paragraph, five for sending something to my supervisor. If I get at least ten points in a day, I allow myself to log off without guilt. It started as a joke during a really bad week when I could not even open my document, but it weirdly worked. The problem is that now I feel like I am cheating, because my progress looks good in the tracker while in reality my chapter is still a chaotic mess and my imposter syndrome brain keeps saying that I am just gamifying procrastination. Has anyone tried similar coping systems that did not turn into pure avoidance. How do you balance these tiny dopamine tricks with the fact that at some point you must actually produce something solid for your committee. Since this place is still small, I would really love to hear from even a couple of people who get this feeling.
