Is CELPIP Better Than IELTS?

If you are planning to move to Canada, you probably have one big question: Should I take IELTS or CELPIP? I have taught both exams, and I feel CELPIP is easier. In this article, I will share my experience and discuss why I feel that CELPIP is easier.

First, let’s talk about Writing. In IELTS, the marking feels very strict. You can write a good essay and still get a low score. In CELPIP, the marking is much more lenient. As long as your English is functional and makes sense, you can get a good score.

Also, the writing task itself is shorter in CELPIP. In the IELTS General test, you have to write at least 250 words for Task 2. That is a long essay. In CELPIP, you only need to write about 150 words for the second task. Because you write less, it is much easier to finish on time and avoid mistakes.

Next is the Speaking section. This is where CELPIP really shines. The questions always follow a fixed type. For example, you know you will be asked to give advice or describe a picture. Because the format is fixed, you can use templates. You can prepare your answers in advance, which is much harder to do in an IELTS face-to-face interview.

Then there is the Listening test. In IELTS, they use accents from all over the world, including Australian, British, and American. Sometimes, the Australian or British accents are hard to understand. CELPIP uses a standard Canadian accent. It sounds just like the English you hear in movies or TV shows, so it is very easy to understand.

Finally, let's look at Reading. Some people say CELPIP reading is hard, but with the right approach, it is actually fine. To get a CLB 9 score, you need about 32 correct answers out of 38. In IELTS, you usually need 34 out of 40 to get the same level. The margin for error is a little better in CELPIP.

If you are struggling with IELTS, give CELPIP a try. With easier writing, predictable speaking questions, and a clear accent, it might be the key to getting your permanent residency.
