(Reuploaded to fix the spacing, unless it’s a glitch.)

Hi. I want to improve the cooling of my GPU, so I can dial down the fan speed at full load. 80c is as high as I’m comfortable going.

My PC Build was going to be a silent 3D workstation. I’ve heard such a computer referred to as a stealth bomber, which it’s not currently, as I find myself facing restrictions on the power of the graphics card. The CPU is powerful enough for my uses, and the dual tower cooler runs like a whisper even at full CPU load. Yet even my rather weak GPU runs fairly varm, and the fans pierce through the case and get’s loud.

As you can tell by the picture, the front panel intake fans are choked as there is only a small right hand side mesh opening. All the fans currently in the front panel deliver good static pressure, so upgrading those fans won’t help.

The case is a Fractal Design Pop XL Silent. This one: https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/pop/pop-xl-silent/black-solid/

The only fans I can add are up to two 140mm fans in the top slots. Right now I have aquired an additional fan to use as front-most top intake or rear-most top exhaust. My plan is to use the additional fan as intake, to saturate the case with cold air. I reckon, the more cold air in the case (and I live high up north), the more cold air for the gpu fans to blow across the heatsink.

Here’s the point of my post. I asked Gemini’s Thinking mode whether to use the top slots to add a intake or a exhaust fan, with this case, and Gemini said that the additional fan should be used as exhaust.

The full answer it gave me sounds pretty smart, and it’s included at the bottom. I don’t trust it, as it goes against my own intuition that more cold air in this case must be better. Anyway, it’s good practice not to trust AI blindly.

What I come here asking for is to know whether Gemini’s answer is correct. I would so appreciate if an actual expert in airflow or fluid dynamics could fact check Geminis answer, then briefly or thoroughly say why it’s logic is right or wrong. That way I’ll know whether to use my new fan as intake or as exhaust.

I could run two tests to see which setup results in the lowest temperature on the single GPU core sensor. But I’d worry that there’s a more optimal way to go about it, that some fellow with a stem degree sees clear as daylight.

The graphics card is just a humble GTX 1070, running at 80% power limit, and the fans still ramp up to 60% to keep it at 78c. I’m just a 3D hobbyist so I keep my components around a long time, I just feel the last few years of developments in computer parts are so cool. I want to upgrade my old graphics card to a rtx 5070 ti, which is a fair few more watts.

Right now I don’t see how I could fit my ambitions in this silent computer case.

Any help I can get here is very appreciated. If the real answer is that I need to switch to an airflow case to fit a more powerful graphics card, like just about every other high perfomance build, that’s fine.

I have my hopes up some smart reddditor can make my ”Stealth Bomber” PC Build possible. You should know that liquid cooling the GPU takes a bit more enthusiasm than I currently feel like giving my workstation.

I could wait with asking this until I have my new graphics card, but if the consensus is I need an airflow case to fit a more powerful GPU, I’d be happy to know that in advance.

Here is Gemini’s full answer to my query: ”Should the additional top slot case fan be intake or exhaust?” We had discussed the details of my PC build previously.

”This is the critical "pivot point" of your build. Your theory is logical—if I feed the CPU from the top, I save the front air for the GPU—but in practice, especially in a Silent case, it creates a thermal traffic jam.
I strongly recommend you move that top fan to the Rear-Most Top Slot as Exhaust.
Here is the physics of why your current theory, while intuitive, is likely hurting your GPU performance.
1. The "Traffic Jam" Scenario (Current Setup)
Currently, you have massive positive pressure (4 IN, 1 OUT).
• The GPU Problem: Your GPU generates heat that naturally wants to rise. However, directly above the GPU/CPU area, you have a top intake fan blasting air down.
• The Collision: The rising hot air from the GPU collides with the descending cool air from the top fan. This turbulence traps heat in the center of the case (around the PCI slots and RAM) because the single rear fan cannot evacuate the air fast enough.
• The Result: Your GPU ends up recycling its own waste heat because the "exit door" (exhaust) is too small for the crowd (air volume) trying to leave.
2. The "Chimney" Scenario (Recommended: Top-Rear Exhaust)
By moving the top fan to the rear-most slot and flipping it to exhaust, you fix the flow.
• Front Fans (Intake): The top-front fan feeds the CPU. The middle and bottom-front fans feed the GPU.
• The CPU: The Dark Rock Pro 5 is a dual-tower cooler. It will happily grab the air from the front-top intake. It does not need the vertical assistance from a top fan.
• The GPU: Heat rises from the backplate. The new top-rear exhaust fan catches this rising heat and throws it out before it can soak into the case walls.
• The Balance: You shift from a 4-In / 1-Out ratio (extreme pressure, heat trapping) to a 3-In / 2-Out ratio. This is the "Golden Ratio" for airflow—still positive pressure (to keep dust out), but with enough exhaust capacity to actually remove the heat.

One warning on top exhaust: Do not use the front-most top slot for exhaust.
If you put an exhaust fan in the front-most top slot, it will suck the fresh cool air coming from the front intake and blow it immediately out of the case before it touches any components. This is called "short-circuiting" the airflow.

Verdict
Move the fan.
The Dark Rock Pro 5 is powerful enough that it doesn't need "help" from a top intake. Your GPU, however, is desperate for a way to get rid of its heat. Giving it a second exhaust fan (Top-Rear) is the single best upgrade you can make to this system's thermal performance.”

Essentially Gemini talks all about physics and told me to use the fan as exhaust. Is Gemini right or wrong?
