How do you get a passport?

I live in Chennai, I am from a small town in Rajasthan. I need a passport but I don't apply here in Chennai because I don't have an address here to my name. The apartment I live in is owned by the company I work for but we don't have an agreement as such.

I go home once in 4-6 months for 10-12 days and that time isn't sufficient enough to do the whole process (apply, get an appointment and then do the police verification etc.) while I am at home. How do I do it?
