Advice Needed: Applying to Masters in Belgium

Hi everyone,

I’m from India and in the process of finalizing finalizing my application for the Master [60] in Biology (BIOL2M1) at UCLouvain for the upcoming intake. I’m specifically looking at the Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology option, which is taught entirely in English.

Here is a quick rundown of my background:

Degrees & GPA:

  1. B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, CGPA: 6.57/10
  2. M.Sc. in Biology, CGPA: 6.57/10
    • Context: This was a 5-year rigorous Dual Degree program.
  3. IELTS BAND 8

Work Experience:

  • Data Analyst (Full-time, 2024 - Present)

Research Experience:

  • Liquid Level Sensing for Vascular Permeability: Modeled hydrostatic pressure effects on blood–brain barrier permeability (Thesis).
  • Biomethanation of Brewery Spent Grains: Studied anaerobic digestion and renewable energy applications.
  • Neuroscience Review: Optogenetic & Bio-imaging applications of Upconversion Nanoparticles for Alzheimer’s.

Publications:

  • "Bioengineering Applications of Intelligent Systems: From Medical Robots to Robotic Rehabilitation Devices" - Communications on Applied Nonlinear Analysis (Accepted, 2025).

My Concerns & Questions:

  1. The "13/20" Admission Requirement: I see that UCLouvain typically requires a minimum average of 13/20 for non-EU applicants.
    • Does anyone know how they convert an Indian CGPA?
    • A 6.57/10 is roughly 65.7%, which theoretically meets the 13/20 (65%) threshold, but it is borderline.
  2. Motivation Letter Strategy: Should I explicitly address the GPA in my motivation letter and point to my publication as proof of research aptitude? Or is it better to just focus on the science?

I am passionate about Interdisciplinary Life Sciences/Data research, but I want to make sure I am not auto-rejected due to the GPA before applying.

Any insights on the difficulty of getting in with this profile would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
