How Risky is it to Fly to SA with a Foreign Passport?

Hi all,

I’m a South African citizen, but have lived abroad in the UK for a few years and my South African passport is expired. I got naturalised and now have a British passport. Can I use that to return to SA even tho I’m still a South African citizen? I heard one shouldn’t but I don’t know what the likely risks are. Any thoughts or experiences appreciated. Thanks all
