Newbie losing sleep because I can’t find a checkmate even if it slapped me
Hey r/chessbeginners,
So I’m basically a newborn baby in the chess world. I started playing on 29th November 2025, and ever since then I’ve been playing like I’m training for the Chess Olympics that nobody invited me to. I may or may not be losing sleep because of this game… apparently I have an “obsessive personality,” but let’s pretend that’s a strength.
Anyway, I know the basics: how the pieces move, how to capture, basic rules, all that. But checkmate? Yeah, that thing is like a mythological creature to me. I’ve watched videos, played games, done all the “beginner tips”… and I STILL can’t spot a mate even if it’s standing in C1 screaming my name.
Because of this, I have been bamboozled, tricked, cooked, and served twice already by people who can see checkmates. Very humbling experience.
People keep telling me, “Take it slow.” I AM taking it slow. I’m basically moving at sloth speed at this point. Still no checkmate abilities unlocked.
So here I am, throwing my last chess-piece-shaped cry for help into the void: If anyone is willing to play with me and patiently teach me (preferably without laughing too hard), I’d really appreciate it. I’m a hands-on learner, and I promise I’m trying my best my brain is just refusing to download the “checkmate” DLC.
Thanks for reading. Send help. Or a tutor. Or both.
