Turns Out AI Can’t Fix ‘We Don’t Know What We’re Doing’

So I was talking to a coworker about our latest AI project and we basically admitted we have no idea what we're doing with it. We threw money at it, everyone's experimenting in different directions, and six months later we have nothing to show for it.

Turns out we're not alone. McKinsey data says 92% of companies investing in AI have zero maturity with it. NINETY TWO PERCENT.

My colleague wrote a thing about why this happens and honestly it hit different. The problem isn't the AI models which are incredible. The problem is everything we're doing wrong above the model layer.

We're skipping the boring deterministic stuff. We're building in silos. We're measuring all the wrong things. And then we're shocked when ROI doesn't materialize.

The part that got me: successful orgs run 60% deterministic automation, 30% AI-assisted, 10% pure AI reasoning. Most companies are trying to do it backwards, asking AI to solve problems we haven't even mapped out yet.

And that final 20% of any feature? It eats 40% of the budget. AI doesn't fix that.

If you're dealing with this nightmare, the full breakdown is worth reading. Real talk about why enterprise AI is broken and what actually separates the 1% that works from the rest of us burning cash.
