How GLP-1 access works in Japan (simple explanation from a pharmacy in Tokyo)
Hi everyone! I work at a pharmacy in Tokyo, and I’ve noticed that a lot of people (locals + travelers + expats) are confused about how Mounjaro/Wegovy actually works here. There’s so much conflicting info online, so I figured we should have a place to share what’s true in Japan.
Here’s the short version:
- You can’t legally get GLP-1 meds in Japan without a doctor’s prescription
- Most consultations do phone/online calls for consultation (very short, 1-3 minutes and even shorter)
- Prescriptions are sent electronically to partner pharmacies or clinics
- Insurance coverage is extremely strict and mostly applies to specific medical conditions, not general weight loss
- For weight management, most people use private clinics (self-pay)
If anyone has questions about access, pricing, side effects, clinics, or pharmacy experiences in Japan, feel free to ask here. I’ll share what I know from the pharmacy side (not medical advice).
Let’s make this a place for accurate info — not rumors. 😊
