Some people don't understand this is a HERO game.
I'm unsure if I've just been subjected to an unpleasant side of the fanbase, but I've seen it enough for me to want to write about it.
It really genuinely bothers me how many people I've seen get the bad ending without doing it purposefully. I don't think it's right to kill Shroud or give up on Courtney. I understand the process behind the decision to kill Shroud, I even thought I was going to, however I literally realized in that moment that the only reason I had that chance was because of villains who were shown kindness and changed for the better.
Same with Invisagal, I saw a lot of people not understanding that you don't have to romance her to not get the bad ending, or even the fact you don't have to romance anyone to get the good end, you just have to be a decent person, and I feel it's ironic for the same people who seemed to forget that the point of the game was to be a HERO. are the same people who make posts and complain about how it's unfair or the writing was "bad".
Dispatch is a game about being a hero. People don't seem to understand that just because Robert cusses, uses violence, and makes mistakes, that he's still a hero, and in a way, you ARE Robert. Not even just because you make the decisions, because despite Robert doing things we likely will never have the chance to do, he still represents the fact that anyone, through trying their best and doing the right thing, can be a hero.
So it bothers me when I see posts boasting about killing shroud or complaining about getting the bad end. Because it's missing the point. It shouldn't be a hard choice to save someone as a hero. Everyone can do it, but some people don't seem to understand that.
Additionally, I don't believe most people want to put in the effort to walk the road of mercy, because it's puts you in uncomfortable situations. Like how Shroud is objectively a bad person, but he doesn't deserve to die, firstly because that would be escapism for him, and secondly because people can change. People always can change and that is what scares people. Because if someone deplorable changes, then you have to change as well, it's no longer black and white, good or bad, now you have to deal with that dilemma too. Mercy does not equal forgiveness, and I do not think that anyone should go unpunished, but that cycle of hate will continue to go on unless someone breaks it, and THAT is part of what a hero does.
