Starting point and gear

Hello guys,

I'm a long time piano player with about 10 years of formal education but I've never played any other instrument. I'd like to learn to play the guitar (electric), my two favorite metal bands are Gojira and Metallica.

Where should I start in terms of gear (something versatile enough) and educational resources?

Thank you for your help!
