Why aren’t we talking about the cities where Black gay men are actually treated WELL?
This is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and I want to raise it here because I’ve noticed a pattern that almost nobody mentions.
A lot of the conversation around racism in gay dating focuses on major metros — LA, Dallas, Miami, even NYC. Those stories matter, and they’re very real.
But there’s another side that barely gets discussed:
There are cities where Black gay men genuinely feel appreciated, visible, and treated with respect. And for some reason, that reality is almost completely absent from online spaces.
For example, when I spent time in places like El Paso, San Antonio, Albuquerque, and other Southwest/border cities + Houston Texas, the entire dynamic shifted.
Things felt more open socially, less clique-driven, less hierarchical, way more relaxed around race, more mutual between Black and Latino men, and less of the “who’s allowed to talk to whom” vibe you see in big metros
I’ve seen more healthy Black–Latino relationships in these areas than anywhere else I’ve lived. I was mostly contacted by men who were TOPS as a Black versatile guy. That was new. Of course there are plenty of guys who are bottoms who wanted me too. The position expectation is literally gone.
Yet online? You almost never hear about these positive experiences. It’s like the only stories that get visibility are the negative ones.
I’m genuinely curious…Why are the affirming experiences of Black gay men in certain cities basically invisible online? Is it because people assume they’re rare? Because the cities aren’t “major players”? Or is it just not something people think to post about?
I’m asking this because I think a lot of LGBTQ folks - especially Black gay men - could benefit from knowing that “your dating life gets better depending on the city” is a real thing. I’m a Black man who feels so secure in myself and well-liked. I want us all to win so bad!
Would love to hear others’ thoughts or experiences. Has anyone else noticed friendlier dating dynamics in less stratified metros?
