Would a Helmed Horror be reasonable for level 2?
So, I am currently designing a dungeon for my homebrew D&D setting, and for encounters I decided there would be:
2 medium encounters
2 hard encounters
1 deadly encounter
+ some easy encounters sprinkled in
Now, the party consists of four 2nd level characters, one with a lot of experience, the other three have playing experience but aren't exactly experts.
Now, their XP threshold for a deadly encounter would be 800 (4x200). A Helmed Horror, at CR 4, is worth 1100 XP. If you divide that among the players, it overshoots their individual deadly encounter thresholds by only 75 XP, so it could actually be feasible if they play it smart.
However, I have my doubts about this, because although the numbers check out relatively well, we're talking a level 2 party against a challenge 4 monster.
What are your thoughts on this?
