Parents of SF & Bay Area, we are moving there but have some healthcare questions.
[SERIOUS REPLIES ONLY]
Hi SF parents. We live in Germany and moving to SF soon on the O1 visa under which my wife will be a dependent who can't work yet. However, we are about to have a baby in March who, unfortunately, has CPAM (Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation).
Germany's socialist healthcare structure covers us fully for childbirth, CPAM treatment, surgery, aftercare, et al.
I know little about US healthcare but I have the privilege to award myself whatever health insurance I want as I am a startup founder and have not selected a healthcare plan for my US employees yet, as currently everyone is hired through an EOR.
I see the option to take 100% coverage for me and dependents which I am happy to go for but I don't know if it would actually cover EVERYTHING. I have heard scary tales about US health insurance coverage and payments but I don't know how much of that is norm vs exceptions.
We have to decide soon and fly by January, or else we will have to wait till May (or several more months if a surgery ensues).
Staying back too long is hard for me as I need to raise my next round of funding in SF and also meet customers in the US but I can't fly even by myself leaving my wife with my 2 other kids in this state, especially as we have no extra help here.
Please help us understand what options we have with regards to US health insurance plans and if it is even feasible for us to fly out by next month.
