Do LLMs Really Run on Inherited Trust? Here’s What I’ve Learned So Far.

Backlinks

I've been studying LLMs (since its early days) to understand how they surface brands, and my understanding is that "LLMs Don't Treat Every Website Equally".

Your site could have 1000+ backlinks and an AI model still won’t cite you.

And yes, they absolutely operate on inherited trust.

AI models won’t mention your brand just because you exist or because you built backlinks.

They will need validation.

And that validation comes from sources the model already trusts.

That’s what “inherited trust” really is.

And there are a few domains that AI treats as reliable signals:

  • Wikipedia
  • EDU/GOV sources
  • Academic content
  • Reputable news outlets
  • High-quality Reddit threads
  • Authoritative niche publications

(and only after that… random blogs where most backlinks come from)

If these sources mention you or recommend you, the model becomes more confident that your brand is real and credible enough to include in an answer.

If they don’t, the model basically has no reason to surface you, no matter how strong your traditional SEO looks.

Anyone else seeing this play out?
