Illinois' freelancer's law and future of freelancer and contractor work

Discussion

Hi people!

Illinois has passed a law about giving much needed benefits and protection for freelancers. Illinois' Freelance Worker Protection Act (effective 2025) passed mandates written contracts, 30-day payment terms, and penalties for non-payment - a massive step forward shielding freelancers from exploitation in the future of work. But as companies lean harder into skill-based hiring and flexible, project-driven roles, it’s easy to overlook the fact that freelancers still face inconsistent protections and high vulnerability compared to employees.

How are companies rethinking their contractor management practices? Will stronger protections change how we budget and scope freelance work? And do you think more states will follow Illinois’ lead as the freelance economy grows?
