Dealing with my mother while having a baby
Hey, how do you deal with your narcissistic mother? My son is her first grandchild and I can tell she uses him to show off during family gatherings. She always wants to hold him and walk around with him. She even takes him out of my hands while im talking with someone else. Plus she seems annoyed when I ask for my baby back, for example to feed him. She does everything in this exaggerated, performative way.
Around the time of his birth she also picked a fight because my partner and I supposedly “ignored” her, and she claimed my husband slammed a door in her face. Meanwhile, we were busy with the maternity nurse and we were running on almost no sleep. She didn’t ask about her grandchild for the first 10 days, and then suddenly called me crying to say she forgives me because she’s my mother , like, what the f?
She has crossed so many boundaries. She even wanted to be present at the birth while I made it very clear that I only wanted my husband there. She actually went to the hospital and told the nurse that I invited her. She even went as far as staying with us “to help,” but she did absolutely nothing.
And to top it all off, she constantly fires a barrage of questions at me about whether my baby is eating enough or if he’s been fed. As if I’m a child who has no clue how to be a mother. It honestly feels like she’s trying to make me insecure on purpose. It’s driving me absolutely crazy.
What should I do with this?
