I sleep only 3-4 times a week for the last 12 years, 24 now. What condition do I have? And how am I alive?

Physician Responded

Since about 12 years old, I’ve noticed I have insomnia to the extreme. When I was in school, I only slept every other night and did that until I finished highschool. Mostly cause I couldn’t fall asleep after one day. When I do fall asleep, I can get the normal 6-8 hours. However if I get 6-8 hours of sleep, I will not be tired 16-18 hours later like most people. It takes me nearly double that and went through all of school that way. Having no time obligations like set times at work the last few years has allowed me to just sleep whenever I feel like it. I’ve clocked in times to experiment, if I get a proper session of sleep, I stay up for about 30-35 hours until I’m tired enough to feel like going to sleep. I start to feel shitty and get headaches around 50 hours no sleep. The longest I’ve unintentionally stayed up is around 4 days, this was due to a vacation that involved a lot of flights, and sleeping before knowing I have a flight is the most impossible challenge I can think of.

This is such a curse. Any obligations at certain times are extremely difficult to accommodate with proper sleep since more than likely, I won’t be able to fall asleep before hand knowing I have to get up at a certain time, so I’m basically forced to stay up even if I’m physically dead tired but my brain isn’t. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to hold down a regular job consider the hell I went through with school.
