Thinking of integrating WhatsApp into your product? Please, learn from my mistake.

General Discussion

I’ve been working on a small reminder tool called Alarmlify. It’s nothing fancy, just a way for people to get the notifications they actually want: medication reminders, appointment alerts, birthdays, stuff you don’t want to forget.

At the beginning, we thought WhatsApp was the perfect channel. Everyone uses it, right? It seemed like the obvious choice. So we went all in, integrated it through Twilio, followed every rule, used approved templates, respected opt-ins, the whole deal.

Honestly, it was one of the biggest headaches we’ve had since starting the project.

If you’re thinking of adding WhatsApp to your own product, I’m just going to be straightforward: think twice.

The template system alone is enough to drive you insane. You can’t just send a simple message. Everything has to be pre-approved, word for word. Change a comma? Rejected. Add a bit more context? Rejected. And even when they approve your template, it can suddenly fail with some cryptic error code and no explanation at all.

And Twilio… unless you’re paying for their top-tier plan, you don’t have real support. No proper tickets, no direct help, just forum posts and automated replies. When WhatsApp broke for us with error 63112, our reminders just stopped. People rely on those reminders and we were completely stuck, unable to reach an actual human being on either platform.

It creates this horrible feeling where your product is failing and you can’t even diagnose why. For a small team, that sort of thing is brutal.

After enough frustration, we moved everything to Telegram. I didn’t expect it to be such a night-and-day difference. Clean API, no template restrictions, no random blocks, messages go through instantly, and you don’t get treated like a problem unless you’re paying for some elite support plan.

Our users get their reminders again, consistently. We can build without feeling like we’re walking on eggshells. And honestly, as a solo dev, that peace of mind is priceless.

If you’re considering using WhatsApp as part of your product, especially something that needs reliable delivery like reminders or alerts, I’d genuinely reconsider. We learned the hard way so maybe you don’t have to.

If anyone wants to know how the migration went or how we set things up around Telegram, happy to share what we learned.
