Gameplay help for a noob

I've watched several hours of videos trying to figure out how to play the game and I didn't want to sift through them again to find the answer to my question. Figured it would be faster here.

My half-brother started plotting against me and eventually built up an army that destroyed my duchy. What are ways I could have prevented this?
