Questions about NYC trip

Hello, some of my family members surprised me with a nyc trip earlier this year, we are planning to drive. I have heard that the boarders could check your phone/digital cameras/devices and I am wondering if the chances of that are high. My dad has a Canadian passport but use to have a Malaysian passport which is a Muslim country. Also about ice do you think it will affect our trip? What could we do to stay safe? Thank you in advance
