Context: In the 60s, the FAU (the organization which developed the especifist tendency within anarchism), like many Latin American left organizations but unlike most anarchist organizations, held a position of critical support for Cuba. This caused a bit of strife among Uruguayan libertarians, especially as the reports of Cuba's repression of anarchists came to light. Nonetheless, the FAU held onto this position, recognizing in the Cuban revolution great value. In their own words:

>*"We, who remain committed to a libertarian socialist program and who know that the Cuban Revolution is not, at least in this moment, the type of popular revolution that we previously promoted, believe that it can constitute . . . the opening for a Latin American way toward socialism and freedom. . . . For what it is today, and for what it could go on to be, we must defend the Cuban Revolution here and throughout Latin America."*

This appreciation was not reciprocated however. Despite leading many of the Cuban solidarity projects within Uruguay, Cuban official visitors to the country expressed extreme suspicion toward the FAU due to their anarchist outlook. They typically refused to engage with them whatsoever, stymying the FAU's project for a Latin American project of left unity. The FAU's interactions with them and the outright treacherous reformists in the "communist" party demonstrate well the shortcomings of 'left-unity'.

To learn more about the FAU and its interesting history I can't recommend [Anarchist Popular Power](https://www.akpress.org/anarchist-popular-power.html) enough.
