American High School Sports

Many public American high schools invest huge amounts of money into their high school sports, most often boys basketball and football. They pay coaches far more than teachers, build large stadiums, and have state of the art practice facilities. Do taxpayers foot the bill for all of that? And what is the benefit to the school? Get that in college there are TV and apparel contracts for schools to make sports profitable but I don’t see the motivation for a high school (and I am an American).
