How do I start learning the guitar properly?

Hi! First time posting here, I apologize if my post is inappropriate here, anw.

For a long time I’ve been playing guitar which started as a project in our high school music class. Since then I continued playing guitar by just watching tutorials and tabs of songs I want to learn (more like a fun hobby). It then just came to me that I want to really “play” the guitar and learn how to make my own songs someday. Feels like I wasted all these years not really learning how to actually play the guitar.

I recently picked up a book about scales, is this the proper way to go? If so how do I go with it? Do I start with major scales, etc.

I want to make blues someday :)
