I see a lot of comments on posts that insurance is a scam, and you'd be better sticking the money in a savings account.
The past two years have been some of the hardest and emotionally exhausting. In September 2023, my cat went into renal failure. He was then diagnosed with feline asthma in August 2024. March 2025 he was diagnosed with oral adenocarcinoma. In the end, none of that is what took him from us. With pet insurance, we were able to manage his kidneys, asthma, and even cancer, spending over $25,000 in the two years. I also work for the vet hospital, so if I didn't have my employee discount, it would've been around $30,000.
The week before Thanksgiving, we did surgery to debulk the cancer in my boy's mouth. However, that surgery triggered a hidden killer. It turns out my cat had asymptomatic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - the muscles in his heart were too thick. The surgery put him into congestive heart failure. We tried to manage both the heart and kidneys, but you have to rob one to help the other. We said goodbye last Sunday and his final claim was processed today.
Had I just put his $100-$160 a month premiums over the past 3 years in a savings account, I would've had to euthanize him in 2023. Insurance gave me 2 more wonderful years with my precious boy.
** all but one of the picture (him laying on the porch at 2 years old) were taken after he went into renal failure as we knew time was limited.
Top right picture was taken in October. Bottom left picture was taken the day before we lost him - attacking birds on the computer screen in the kitty ICU - 12 hours later he went into respiratory distress and never recovered.
