Other than saving time, are any of you seeing tangible financial benefit to using a tax accountant?

I’ve always been too proud to have anyone else do any of my tax accounting; I figured that I do a good job, I claim all that I’m entitled to, and it doesn’t take that much time every quarter/EOFY, so why have someone else do it.

I’ve had a friend in the same industry (IT contractor working under ABN) tell me about some of the ‘tricks’ his tax accountant uses, and man, they’re pretty fucking clever. Like, owning a PO Box in between yourself and your workplace that you ‘check to and from work’ to make travel to and form your workplace deductible; I like to think I’m crafty, but I never would have thought of that.

Anyway my question to people who are very literate on income tax, are you seeing a financial benefit from using a tax accountant or is it all time saving? Any ‘tricks’ you’re willing to share for free?
