“Flipped Classroom” Learning
My school has decided that instead of normal lectures, they’re going to implement “flipped classrooms.” (They have been trialing this with us this last term and I have H A T E D it.)
This means the professors are going to use our lecture time to speak/lecture for 15 minutes on the topics of the week, and the rest of the time students are to spend lecture time in groups studying “the way they learn best” and then teaching the class what they learned.
We have 2 hours of lecture once a week. This means 15 minutes of teaching and the rest of my time is self study.
Am I crazy for being upset about this? I’m not paying tuition to be taught by my classmates. I don’t want to attend a lecture where the professor doesn’t even teach.
Please note that I have no issue learning from classmates and coworkers. I just genuinely feel like I’m not learning anything in lecture anymore with the current setup and my program is turning entirely into a self-study/online nursing program (it’s supposed to be in person/hybrid.) I’m getting extremely disheartened paying so much money to feel as though I’m going to be a less than mediocre nurse who won’t succeed in the field.
Do I call my student advisor and talk things out? All these changes are coming from the DON and aDON. Or do I just bury my head in the sand and hope for the best?
