What do I do if I'm being neglected at a psych ward? (US)
I recently had the worst psych ward experience of my life! I probably shouldn't have been admitted since I wasn't a threat to myself or others, but I was too out of it to put up any kind of resistance. after an hour, I was back to my normal self, so I requested to speak to my mom to sort all this out, and they kept telling me to give them 5 minutes.
after a few hours, I asked to speak with a manager, and that never happened in the six days I was there. At some point I asked to speak with either a lawyer, or someone in law enforcement, and that never happened. I was completely powerless, regardless of the fact that I was safe, and coherent. After a couple of hours of asking to speak to a lawyer, and being flatly denied, I gave up.
It somehow took them 3 days to get one of my medications, and as a result, I went through some awful withdrawals. other patients were being neglected, and I spent a lot of time trying to calm other patients down. Even the nurses seemed upset with the situation, but they were so understaffed, that they had to focus almost entirely on their duties. One nurse was ill, but they told her she had to come in. She looked miserable.
I decided not to pursue any kind of legal action (assuming that's even possible), but what do I do if this happens again? Is there anything I can do from the inside to get placed somewhere else?
