Moving out of my brown parents house
I’m a 23 F. First generation born in Canada my parents are from India. They are open minded compared to other immigrant parents but still strict and over bearing. I have to sneak out of my house still and when I do tell them I’m going out it’s always, “ what time will you be home, who’s going to be there, etc. “ as much as I understand i live under their roof still and should respect rules they have for their house- they basically begged me to stay after a huge blowout I had with them a couple months because I couldn’t take the fighting anymore. I would be going out every weekend, go drink and come home couple hours later than I told them I would. They would ( and still do) blow up my phone if I don’t answer. Literally just yesterday I told my dad I went to uni to study for my finals. I actually went to my boyfriend’s house. I only lied because I don’t feel comfortable telling my dad about my boyfriend right now because we’re trying to work things out between us. Nonetheless, my dad starts texting and calling me non stop within the first hour of me leaving the house. Hes suspicious of where I am …. He had NO reason to believe I was any where else except uni ( like I told him) so I’m pretty sure he has a tracker in my car. Then he continues to say how I’m “ scaring “ him … mind you it’s like 2pm. He literally called me 30 times non stop and I kept declining cuz I was so frustrated I had to put my phone on airplane mode.
Anyway this is just one of the many incidents, but it really made me realize that I’m so unhappy at home. And they don’t understand. They think just because they love me and gave me everything I’ve wanted, I’m ungrateful now that I want to move and live on my own terms. I tried staying at home to keep them happy but incidents like these remind me that life is too short to be living unhappy for the sake of keeping them comfortable. And even me staying home isn’t keeping them happy- they don’t sleep till I’m home, if I don’t clean my room it stresses them out, if I sleep in on a weekend, I’m lazy and my mom looks and talks to me like I’m trash. It’s just ridiculous. And not to mention, if I was a bum and throwing my life away I would understand. But that’s not the case. I’m in my last semester of uni for my bachelors degree in accounting - I literally graduate in 2 weeks from now. I already have a job offered signed from one of the big 4 accounting firms. So I have my sh*t together. I just can’t win.
I need some validation because I feel like I’m going crazy. I know how I feel is my truth but my parents have a way of making this borderline abusive behaviour justified and I start questioning if how I feel is even valid. I know they will be upset that I’m moving because the way they see it is that I’m “ abandoning” the family ( their words) which is not the case from my side- I don’t want to cut them off. I just need my own space as an adult because they treat me like I should do only what’s good for the family as a unit. And in our culture that’s the way it’s supposed to be. But that’s not how I want to live. Does that make me selfish? Does it make me a bad person? Idk cuz they then start pushing a narrative that I don’t have family values and im disappointing them when I don’t consider how my actions are affecting them. I DONT WANT TO CONSIDER THEIR FEELINGS I JUST WANT TO LIVE MY OWN LIFE.
Are there any other people who have this issue??? I’m going crazy
