Making sense of general shifts in film culture due to technology, corporate mergers, etc
I wrote the following in another subreddit regarding, with admittedly broad strokes, how I see film culture today, and I was wondering what other people’s thoughts would be:
I don’t think film-as-art is dead. There are still interesting films being made on an annual basis. What is “dead” is the mainstream cinema paradigm of the last roughly 40-odd years, and this is due partly to technology and changing consumer habits and partly to corporate mergers like Fox-Disney and now WB-Netflix.
I do think there’s growing interest in ‘auteur cinema’ among younger generations even compared to just 12-15 years ago. This is due partly to IP-fatigue and partly to institutions like Criterion knowing how to properly market themselves.
It does feel like a return to the 1960s and 1970s in the sense of less “commercial friendly” auteur projects garnering mainstream cultural visibility, because “mainstream films for adults” like Rain Man, Good Will Hunting and so forth aren’t taking up as much of the cultural bandwidth as they did 20-25 years ago, so there’s more room for stuff like The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value(which I didn’t think was particularly great), and It Was Just an Accident within the mainstream conversation since the critical establishment obviously won’t just start rewarding tentpole films as the replacement for 90s era Oscar bait and “movies for adults”. In the 80s and 90s, it seems directors like Hou Hsiao-Hsen and Bela Tarr were hardly seen outside festivals, although Wenders and Kieslowski obviously broke into the mainstream somewhat. Today, something like Les Amants du Pont-Neuf or heck, Tarkovsky’s The Sacrifice would be a potential Best Picture nominee.
In the 60s and 70s you had guys like Fellini and Bergman consistently being nominated for Oscars since the mainstream was collapsing under the weight of bloated epics like Cleopatra and The Agony and the Ecstasy once the Mankiewicz, Zinnemann, and Curtiz films slowly fizzled out.
