Could my thyroid be the cause of sudden anxiety/panic attacks?

Discussion

Hi everyone: I’m joining this group hoping to get some guidance while I wait for my upcoming endocrinology appointment.

Back in October, I started having unusually high anxiety over everyday situations. By early November things escalated, and I stopped leaving my house for 22 days because of intense anxiety and panic attacks. I was having 2–4 panic attacks a day, with symptoms like chest pain, trembling, teeth chattering, dizziness, weakness in my legs, and a constant feeling something was wrong.

Whenever I felt the anxiety coming on, I noticed that eating honey helped sometimes, which made me wonder if it was blood sugar related. My doctors didn’t think it was hypoglycemia and said it was likely anxiety, but I pushed for more labs, including insulin and thyroid tests.

My blood sugar and insulin were normal, but the results showed:

  • Very low vitamin D
  • Elevated thyroid antibodies
    • TSH 4.040 mU/L
    • Free T4 13.80 pmol/L
    • ATG: 47IU/mL
    • aTPO: 98.70 iu/ML

So now I’m wondering if this could be thyroidrelated specifically early Hashimoto’s (i was previously diagnosed with back in 2016 but have been managing through diet/lifestyle) and whether that could be causing or worsening the anxiety and panic symptoms. I’ve read that thyroid issues can affect mood and nervous system function, but I’m not sure how common that is.

Has anyone experienced anxiety or panic symptoms as part of thyroid dysfunction or Hashimoto’s? If so, did things improve after treatment?

Any advice or shared experiences would be really appreciated.
