I am writing this post because I recently came across deeply disturbing accounts from a friend who studied at Utkal University, and I believe there should be a space for a public discussion about student safety.

Over the years, multiple female students have allegedly raised complaints or concerns about serious misconduct involving a senior figure at the university. These accounts, as narrated by former students, mention harassment, inappropriate behaviour, and misuse of academic power.

Some students, according to what I was told, have even left their PhD programs midway, citing an uncomfortable or unsafe working environment. In a few conversations, it was mentioned that complaints or FIRs were reportedly filed in the past, although students claim that no visible action followed.

For legal reasons, I am not naming the individual, but students or alumni familiar with the situation may already know whom I am referring to. I want to be clear that I am not making accusations, nor asserting any allegations as fact. I am only sharing what former students have claimed and seeking guidance on proper channels.

My questions are:

How should students seek help when the allegations involve someone in a position of authority?

Is there any safe, impartial mechanism in Odisha or nationally for reporting such concerns?

What can students or alumni do when complaints appear to lead nowhere?

This post is not intended to target any person, but to highlight broader issues that students often face:

Students feeling powerless against authority figures

Female scholars abandoning research opportunities due to fear or discomfort

Lack of visible institutional action even when issues are reportedly raised

If anyone here has experience with:

University-level grievance redressal systems

POSH committees

Legal aid in Odisha

Student rights protections

Safely escalating such cases

…your guidance would be extremely valuable.

My intention is not defamation, but awareness, safety, and understanding the correct procedures for students needing help.

If this post isn’t allowed, mods may remove it — but I felt the conversation needed to happen somewhere.

I used ChatGPT to make it written in a better way.
