Cover Letter?

May be a stupid question but what should I put on my cover letter? I'm super new and just applying to random things on backstage. Done educational theatre in the past but never anything else. I have a resume and have that submitted but different casting calls are asking for different things on the cover letter, do I write a different one for each application? Sorry for the stupid question.
