Nikon pre AI to AI conversion

Outside of grinding the slots in the camera side of the lens, I have a question

I have 2 50mm f2 lenses. One is Pre-AI, one is AI. Can I disassemble the flange on both and swap them to convert? Or is something else going on inside the lens that would inhibit that?
