Microsoft Update Renders Apps Unusable

Yesterday on my work computer, me and my coworkers were no longer able to open any apps other than Google Chrome. I cannot open Outlook, Teams, Settings, Calculator, File Manager, etc. Our IT team is claiming this is due to a Microsoft update but I am not finding any other news or posts of people having issues. Does anyone have any insight? Could this be something other than a Microsoft update that I should be concerned about? We all work remotely so I know it's not a network issue but I'm nervous this is more than something caused by a Microsoft update.
