Airport rage

Rage post about Berlin airport. It has just taken me two hours to clear non EU passport control on a Wednesday afternoon during off peak season. The reasons for this seem to be minimal staff and confusion about the new ESS kiosks.

Upon arrival it is clearly sign posted that one should check in with a self-servic kiosk (of which there are approximately 20) and then proceed to passport control. Unfortunately almost NO ONE did this which meant they had to have their fingerprints and photo taken manually by the border guards which I think added over an hour to the queue wait. I cannot understand why there were no staff to guide this behaviour - everyone self serving their biometrics would be easy to do and save so much time.

Am I right to be surprised at how inefficient this is ? Surely this is untenable heading into Christmas??
