Lost $182k in crypto volatility. My biggest lesson? My kids need to learn real finance. Building an app for them
My Crypto Loss Taught Me a Hard Lesson I Want to Save My Kids From
My Context
Hi, I'm a software developer. In the 2021 and 2024 bull markets, I managed to turn a $1k crypto portfolio into $183k. However, I lost every penny of it due to market volatility and, frankly, getting too caught up in the hype and emotional trading. I'm doing fine now—I only invested what I could afford to lose. But the stress, the time, and the sheer mental exhaustion of that experience were immense. It was an incredibly painful way to learn some basic, hard truths about finance, risk management, and human psychology.
The Motivation
I have two young kids, and after going through that rollercoaster, I desperately want them to learn fundamental finance concepts (budgeting, compounding, risk) early in their lives. I want them to understand the *why* before they ever get near a volatile asset. As a developer, I decided the best way to do this was to build a simple, interactive app for them. I'm building it to make basic finance concepts fun and intuitive.
I'd love to hear from this community:
- What is the single most important financial concept you wish you learned before you turned 20?
- As parents, what finance topics do you struggle to teach your kids? I've been working on a beta version.
For anyone interested in seeing what it looks like and giving feedback, I'll post the link to the app features in the comments below.
