Review of TPS (Pocket Spring Store) Premium Cover

Hi all,

A year or two ago I ordered some TPS coils.  While I liked the coils overall, I found - like many others here - that they did not keep their shape and wanted to spread out.  When I told Matan this, he was nice enough to give me a review sample of the TPS premium cover, which he says should alleviate that issue.  Now, on to my review.

Pros:

  • The top panel is a very stretchy fabric that does not restrict the feel of the underlying comfort layers.  Of the stand-alone covers for DIY'ers, this is the stretchiest I have tried.
  • The zipper at the half way point on the side is really great.  Not only does it do a better job restricting the coils (more on that below), but it also makes it easier to put everything together since you can use the first half of the cover to start getting things lined up and held in the correct shape before adding all the other layers.  That design, for me, is the high point of the cover.
  • The waterfall edge gives a nice finished look and you don't feel the edge construction, which is nice.
  • The side panel does a good job hiding the shape of the coils.  I used to be able to see the coils, but now I can't.
  • Sizing: it was true to size in terms of height.  With previous covers I have had to order 1-2" taller than I needed to get things to fit properly.   On this, I do not think you should.  Go with true to size.

Cons:

  • The zipper is small and not the highest quality.  The teeth are the "coil" type instead of the molded type, and the size is just plain small.  I think for the price, I would expect a bigger, higher quality zipper especially if you want a tight fit that really needs to squeeze.  I'd be afraid to zip this over and over if it was tight, which for many DIYers is the case...
  • The side material is a bit more flexible and less stiff than I would have liked / expected.  On my old cover, the coils would spread about 3".  On this one, it's about 1.75" or so.  So definitely better, but I feel like a stiffer side would make it even better.  (I think they could even be 1/2" smaller on the length and width dimensions - it was looser than my last encasement. This would help squeeze the coils a bit more too.)

Overall, I would say if you're buying the TPS coils and want a very stretchy cover, this is a great option.  I do think the price point is a bit high - especially given its a thin stretchy cover with a small zipper.  For the same price, you can get a wool quilted option with a better zipper.  But, those options don't have the side zip and stretchy top.  So - decide what is important to you.

As for improvements - if you improved the zipper to a larger molded zipper, stiffened the side panels a bit, and made it about 1/2" smaller in length and width, it would be fantastic.

Thank you again to Matan ( u/pocketsprung ) for responding to the needs and feedback of DIYers.
