Pluribus is an allegory for religious zealotry
Pluribus can be viewed as an allegory for the psychology of religious zealotry, specifically how a belief system that preaches compassion can rationalize coercion and harm in the name of "salvation".
There's a stark contrast between the Hive's self-image and its actions. They operate according to a strict ethical code, where they claim to "do no harm", refusing to kill non-human animals and humans alike, and even damaging plants. Their moral worldview is built around peace and empathy. But this commitment to non-violence doesn't prevent them from forcibly infecting people against their will, violating their bodily integrity and consent. But they describe all this as actually being compassionate. Zosia describes Carol as "drowning", and cut off from the harmony of the collective Hive. From their perspective, spreading the virus is an act of compassion, not aggression.
The Hive's behavior mirrors the logic of religious zealotry. When a belief system promises ultimate salvation (eternal life in Heaven, utopia, etc.), believers can justify violence in the name of spreading thie belief as actually being the kind thing to do. Historically, movements that preach peace, like Christianity's "love thy neighbor", "thou shall not kill", have waged wars, conducted inquisitions, forced conversions, and killed nonbelievers in the millions. The justification is always the same - that the killing and the harm is not truly harmful if it leads to eternal life in heaven.
Like real-world religious zealots, the Hive are all utterly and completely convinced of their righteousness. But their compassion is genuine, which makes their actions even more unsettling. Pluribus shows how dangerous this kind of moral certainty is. Carol symbolizes the skeptic, or nonbeliever.
Pluribus offers a sharp critique of ideological systems (religious or other) that value the "greater good" so absolutely that individual rights, consent, and diversity of thought become irrelevant. It dramatizes how easily moral ideals can become instrument sof coercion.
I can't wait to see where this goes.
