Birth control options and feeling lost

Which Method?

I’ve never taken birth control and had my first-ever appointment with an OBGYN earlier this week. The appt. was for an annual exam and Pap smear, which went fine.

I was hoping to have a good discussion about birth control, but the conversation about this was short and I left the visit not feeling super informed. My OB was nice enough, but she was 45 minutes late meeting with me and the visit felt a bit rushed. She listened to me about what types of side affects I’m hoping avoid, recommended an IUD, and gave me a pamphlet.

She didn’t really talk to me about the possible side effects of the IUD she recommended. I asked for pain control options for IUD placement as I don’t have kids and am also a virgin. My OB was pretty dismissive of IUD placement causing much pain.

I’m not sure what I expected to get out of the appointment, but I left feeling more anxious and confused about birth control options than prior to meeting with my OB. I’m pretty healthy and have normal periods, good mental health, and a healthy sex drive. I’m worried birth control affecting these things and driving my quality of life down.

Does anyone recommend reaching out to another OBGYN to get a second opinion? Do OBs even meet with people just to discuss birth control?
