26-year-old Aussie moving to the UK in 3 weeks — looking for advice on where to live in Bristol
Hi all, I’m a 26-year-old Australian moving to the UK in about three weeks and planning to base myself in Bristol, but I’m struggling to figure out the best areas to live, what’s safe, and what a realistic budget looks like.
A bit about me for context:
• I’m a qualified teacher, hoping to work in local schools, ideally in special education or supporting kids with learning disabilities • I’m social but not a big partier, more into good pubs, live music, gym, and getting outdoors • I’m hoping to meet new people and build a solid routine and community • Budget-wise, I’m trying to get a feel for rent, groceries, and general living costs in Bristol
I’ve been researching different neighbourhoods but keep getting mixed or outdated information, so I’d really appreciate local insight on things like:
• Which neighbourhoods suit someone new to the city • Areas that are safe, well-connected, and good for young professionals • Average rental prices for a room in a share house or a small one-bed flat • What to expect weekly for groceries and other expenses • Any insight into teaching jobs in Bristol, especially SEN roles • General advice for someone relocating from overseas and trying to settle in quickly
Any help would mean a lot. Really looking forward to the move and just want to set myself up properly from day one.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their experience.
