What is this short story??

I’ve been doing a reread and some stories run together. I remember it takes place mostly on a street. Two boys were playing football with two girls. I think a kid was delivering papers and gets killed. A retired police man lives on the street. A guy just going through the town goes into a gas station/store. I can’t remember what the bad thing was l. Help!!
