Best advice for bleaching my own hair

I've never bleached or dyed my hair before. I recently cut my 4 year growth off to a buzz to try bleach it. I've got dark brown hair if that helps. I don't want to get an orange finish, I'm chasing a white-blonde hair colour so I can have fun dyeing patterns into it. Is there certain bleach to use and toners? Or is it basically grab whatever and follow instructions? Thanks in advanced :)
