St5 fan theories/brainstorming
I'm not gonna mention all specific/relevant easter eggs/clues I've used to formulate the below theories, but it's all based on things we've seen on the show/commentary by cast & production. I don't mean to say my theories aren't subjective (they obviously are and I haven't tested them yet ;-)); it would just take me too long to put together all relevant cues. That said, hopefully the below is sufficiently logical and if you've picked up at least some of the cues yourself you will hopefully get what I mean.
1: TUD
TUD isn’t frozen physically at a point in time; it is frozen psychologically at the moment when Will was taken (Nov 6 1983). Everything in that world is anchored to memory-state, not to chronological time. When emotional continuity breaks, the environment updates or destabilizes, which is exactly what happens after Max dies and is revived (more on Max below).
In ST5, Eleven and Hopper are in a future version of TUD reachable via the main gate at the Mac Z. That's where the military base is located and why it can be located there at all. The Vecna version we saw leave that gate in ep4 is a "future" Vecna, which is why he looks so different.
2: Time loop
We've actually been witnessing a time loop and the events in ST4, i.e. when Nancy and co. set Vecna on fire, precede the events in ST1, when Will's captured. The time loop could've started after Eleven resuscitated Max, as she literally alters the natural cycle of things when she does it. This would explain why Vecna says "you've already lost". For more on this, see this reddit theory (https://www.reddit.com/r/HawkinsAVclub/comments/1pgyhe7/time\_travel\_all\_along\_causality\_is\_broken\_in/).
After the events of ST4, Will didn’t just encounter TUD; he imprinted onto its architecture when he was taken. His consciousness became part of its base code, which is why he can influence vines, feel dimensional shifts, or override hive logic. He isn’t accessing Vecna’s system but his own stored imprint. Again, TUD we've always known is frozen in 1983 because reality there is memory-coded, not time-coded, at the moment when Will was "marked", which happened around the date when Eleven created it. When Eleven resurrected Max, not only did a time loop start, but it also caused TUD timeline to bifurcate.
What Vecna does in ST4, with the 4 killings, is what allows access to multiple versions of TUD. Nancy and co. are now in a "past" version of TUD, even before the events unfolding in ST1. I think we see a Turnbow Realty poster saying "Summer" but hiding the year (there's a literal hole there, which doesn't seem like a coincidence, the Duffers didn't want to spoil the plot twist that quickly in volume 1) to demonstrate that Eleven/Hopper aren't in 1983, and the same would apply analogically to Nancy and team.
Somehow, in TUD, communication via their walkies is still possible. Maybe electromagnetic signals propagate through the same spatial coordinates even when temporal slices differ. Space would stay continuous in that sense, between layers even if time is not. This could explain why two groups would occupy different versions of TUD and still communicate linearly.
I also think Dr Kay is someone we've already know. Maybe she's "future" Holly or alternatively "present" Holly after Holly comes back in time, but first option seems more aligned with all the above. Whoever she is, I think she will be more important in vols2/3.
Also think that the Kali El finds in the military base is a "future" Kali. We might even see the "present" Kali being captured by the military in vol2/3. "Present" Kali could be the one projecting the visions of Mr Whatsit to the kids in vol1. It's really weird that Holly is actually seeing and interacting with Mr Whatsit in TRSU. It looked more like an illusion than the type of trance Max, Chrissy, etc. experienced in ST4.
3: Max
Max will play a big role. In the end, she will either swap places somehow with Lucas and live in TRSU without him or she will be trapped forever in another dimension and Lucas will go on a quest to save her at the end of vol3, but we won't ever really know if he will succeed or not. Third possibility is that he will sacrifice himself to save Max or live with different ages due to time traveling, but I think the former theories sound more likely/reasonable.
For background, my theory is that Max exists in two states: a living body in TRSU and a consciousness suspended inside Vecna’s memory substrate. Because both states remain active, reality branches and cannot collapse into a single timeline. The loop ends only when Max’s physical and conscious selves reconcile—or when one doesn’t survive.
Whenever Eleven intervenes in events that should reach resolution (like Max’s death), she reopens closed outcomes rather than completing them. This creates branching versions of reality that coexist rather than collapse. Her power is not only destructive or psychic, in the sense that it literally disrupts finality.
4: Vecna's plan
I think Vecna's ultimate plan is to build a tesseract with the 12 kids by combining them with the 4 deaths in season 4 to have 16 anchor points which will be placed in different time versions of TUD. That will somehow turn TUD into a wormhole that will bridge dim x and TRSU and break space/time altogether once the mind flayer crosses it. The Mind Flayer represents Kronos in this set up in the sense that it would "master" time only to destroy it. Without time/evolution/progression, it would effectively control everything and everyone in TRSU. Vecna wants stasis, so he wants to consume temporal progression to control nature. That's the plan. See this reddit theory for a more elegant/sophisticated scientific analysis of what I'm hinting at (at least partially) (https://www.reddit.com/r/StrangerThings/s/sc1P67yTI0).
Obviously everyone wants us to think that the Mind Flayer is the big evil pulling the strings behind it all. I think the Mind Flayer rather represents "evil" itself and "wrong choices" and ultimately Vecna took all of the wrong choices by letting his ego and desire override his humanity. So the Mind Flayer puppeteering Vecna represents that for me, but we will see how it will play out.
Ultimately, and maybe I'm repeating myself, Vecna wants no time (stasis, eternal present, freeze-state) and Eleven is an issue for him because she represents entropy (motion, change, uncontrolled evolution).
5: Ending
Events won't be erased/altered, given we're already in a timeloop.
The loop doesn’t rewrite or cancel past events, so every event will remain true and historically consistent. What will end is accessibility once the loop ends (i.e. when emotional and narrative states converge into one resolved line). The past does not change; it simply stops remaining open for future intervention and the characters can finally go on with their lives.
I always thought the end of stranger things would have Will lock himself forever in TUD and rule it instead of Vecna as the ultimate sacrifice to save the rest of the gang, but after v1 I'm not so sure. It really feels like the Duffers are making it seem like El will find achievement and realization in and by herself with the support of the family she never had (her parents i.e. Hop and Joyce) and Mike will actually end up with Will. Either that or they are keeping things very ambiguous on purpose.
That said, I still think that Will will be key in solving TUD problem. In the endgame, he will somehow close it or neutralize its threat by stabilizing the imprint that began the entire freeze-state. His final act will not be destruction but reconfiguration, i.e. anchoring reality to a resolved emotional state so time can move forward again. Maybe he would somehow "liberate" Max from the prison even if she goes into another dimension (where she's free) but not TRSU. In that sense, Eleven would've freed Max's body/matter in ST4 but only with Will would Max's mind/soul be liberated. That would effectively end the time loop and access to TUD or TUD as we know it.
