OK r/melbourne — sit back and take this in because this story has layers. Just like the ham it’s about.

A few Fridays ago, some tradies in Carlton North were renovating a random shopfront. I rock up and they’re arguing about who stole whose can of VB and listening to Gold 104.3.

Anyway, they knock down a wall and suddenly there’s a ghost sign from 1930 staring me in the face.

Now, you can tell by my username I love a good ghost sign. But this one isn’t just any ghost sign.
Not a Robur Tea.
Not a Capstan Cigarettes.
Not even the classic “Have a Vegemite Sandwich, Dickhead.”

No. It’s an advertising mural for HUTTON’S PINEAPPLE BRAND HAM & BACON (aka the Sistine Chapel of Meat).

And right in the centre: A bowler-hatted man I have dubbed Ham Daddy™ delivering a DON’T ARGUE so violent it could destroy the Burke & Wills statues.

This man is not defending himself.
He is performing an exorcism.
He is ejecting another man from the postcode.
He is spiritually relocating someone to Bendigo.

And in faded lettering, like the gentle whisper of a drunk uncle at Christmas it says:

DON’T ARGUE!
NOTHING TO ARGUE ABOUT!

What do you MEAN “nothing to argue about”??
Sir, you have just blasted a man into the astral plane using only your palm.

But here’s where the story gets feral-rabbit-in-the-Dandenongs-level unhinged:

THE MOVE WAS INVENTED BY A VAUDEVILLE COMEDIAN.

A man named Mel B. Spur (sounds like the name a horse that accidentally wandered onto the Melbourne Cup track) created the stiff-arm as part of his comedy routine, yelling “DON’T ARGUE!” every time he smacked a colleague off the stage.

This was back when you could legally concuss someone for a laugh.

Hutton’s marketing team saw this absolute chaos and said: “THIS. PUT THIS ON THE HAM.”

Imagine working in advertising in 1930:
Boss: We need to sell more ham. Any ideas?
Employee: Violence?
Boss: Brilliant. Raise his salary by two shillings.

And thus, the chain of creation:

Ham → Vaudeville → Marketing → Dusty Martin → You stiff-arming your mate outside Revolver at 3am

And suddenly we’ve got:
• A catchphrase
• A footy manoeuvre
• A ghost sign that could beat YOU in a fight
• And eventually Dustin Martin yeeting opponents into the multiverse

All because some vaudeville bloke wanted to assault his cast mates in 1910.

DUSTY WALKED SO MEL B. SPUR COULD RUN — NO WAIT.
MEL B. SPUR WALKED SO DUSTY COULD YEET.
NO — HAM CRAWLED SO MEL B. SPUR COULD WALK SO DUSTY COULD YEET.
This is the chain of evolution.
This is the Circle of Life.
This is science.

AND NOW the sign has been re-covered (a hate crime) like nothing happened. As if this slab of painted pork propaganda isn’t the Rosetta Stone of the AFL.

If there is any justice in the world, this thing belongs in the Melbourne Museum next to Sad Otter.

Anyway, that’s your cursed Melbourne history for the evening.

Go forth. Perform a don’t argue in honour of Ham Daddy™, the forgotten father of footy physics.

DON’T ARGUE.
I’m drunk on heritage and nobody can stop me.

THE DON’T ARGUE WAS INVENTED BY A HAM MASCOT AND MELBOURNE NEEDS TO TALK ABOUT IT
