I need help dealing with the slumlords from hell

Location: Florida

A month ago, my partner and I moved home due to a family emergency and needed a place to live VERY quickly. We were definitely in a vulnerable position and easy to be taken advantage of. We got into a place owned by a private landlord. I went on one tour and it seemed not great but not terrible.

The lease was signed in a hurry, and I overlooked some things that are both important and possibly illegal. They gave themselves a clause saying they are not responsible for any pest problems. It wasn’t until after move in that we realize the place had roaches. They claimed they couldn’t do anything & advised me to “read the lease.”

There is also a clause stating that signing is the agreement that everything in the house is fine and we accept the things that are wrong. We didn’t realize that they painted over corners of the laundry room to HIDE severe water damage and what is possibly mold. I asked them to test for mold & they said they had in the past, but could not provide paperwork.

There are also several appliances that do not work that we couldn’t have checked during a walkthrough. The dryer needs to be ran multiple times to dry, the garbage disposal does not work at all, half the burners on the stove do not work and the dishwasher does not work.

Upon moving in, we were also told the SEVERELY warped & water damaged kitchen cabinets would be fixed. My lease was signed early November and I am now being told I will not have useable cabinets installed until after Christmas.

Finally, and this is the absolute last straw, I found a RAT sitting on my kitchen counter tonight. There are holes behind the dryers where RATS have been coming and going every single night. We’ve heard noises but we thought it was the A/C. I am four months pregnant and this is BULLSHIT.

We do not even have very much food or kitchen things unpacked because our kitchen is basically unusable. These pest problems are not my partner or I’s doing. We have no cabinets that we feel comfortable using. We barely use the kitchen as it is because all the shit we need to use it doesn’t even fucking work.

I am pregnant and we only moved due to something very personal and tragic. We are not financially in a place to fight something like this or to break a lease or even take the time off work/life necessary to uproot our lives AGAIN. I am so fucking angry it’s unbelievable. I don’t know what to do.
