Australian immigrant (legal US permanent resident though!) looking to move to NYC as a nanny. What should I do or know?
I am 22F, I am getting certified with first aid, infant first aid, and a ”working with children certification“ (while I am here in Australia). I have no other obligations or jobs in NYC currently, so I will be available for many hours. I will be living nearby in Pennsylvania with my family while applying online.
Although I do not have any professional child-care experience, I am the oldest immigrant daughter of 8 and was partially responsible for raising my 7 younger siblings (the youngest is now 9). I also have 2 nieces and a nephew, who I help babysit for regularly.
I am an incredibly friendly, sociable person, and kids love me. I have worked in many different retail and hospitality jobs around the world, where all my managers leave me good feedback.
The niche I would be selling (as a carer for the family); I am someone interesting and well-travelled, who is able to make kid’s lives fun and exciting, while still providing the stability they need for good routines, and the responsibility they need from a carer. I am interested in politics, culture (particularly the arts and fashion) and history, and would love to work for parent(s) who are interested in those things too, so that interest remains alive in their child’s lives. I am more than willing to help with chores around the house.
I’m a big daydreamer, so obviously my dream (and unrealistic) gig is being a live-in nanny for a family in Manhattan… I would love to hear what my expectations should be though, realistically. Any other qualifications I should get, anything I should highlight about myself.
I am young and dreaming of a NYC life, and I think that being a nanny for a lovely family, would be a fantastic foot in the door!
