Born abroad, limited passport. How to prove ties to retain citizenship?
Hi everyone,
I am a dual citizen (SE/CA) born in Canada. I recently applied for my first Swedish passport, but the Embassy only issued a limited one expiring the day before I turn 22 (April 2028).
Context:
My administrative history is complicated. When I was born, my father registered me with Swedish authorities, but apparently, only my surname was recorded, my first name was never added.
I actually went to the Embassy a year ago to apply with my family, but I was unable to proceed because of this error (I existed in the system, but only by surname). I had to go through a process to officially add my first name before I could try again.
When I finally applied for the passport recently, another anomaly came up: I have held a full personnummer my entire life, despite never having lived in Sweden. Because of this status without residency, the Embassy had to investigate my case. After months of waiting, they finally approved the passport, but with the limited validity caveat.
The Current Problem:
Because I’ve never actually lived in Sweden, the Embassy stated my current ties are "insufficient" to prove affiliation (samhörighet).
My Ties:
I have family in Sweden, but I personally only speak to them about once a year. However, my parents (who have been Swedish citizens for 4 decades and were married in Sweden) speak to them much more regularly, about every 3 months.
• The Goal: I need to build my own case to retain my citizenship before I turn 22, rather than relying on my parents' connections.
My Plan:
I have about 2.5 years to build my case. I can't move there for a full year due to school, but I plan to:
• Take summer university courses in Sweden.
• Apply for a summer job.
• Book regular visits to stay with family.
• Learn the Swedish language.
I also plan on living in Sweden in the next 15-20 years
My Questions:
-
Did shorter stays (like summer courses) count as enough "affiliation"?
-
Does having a full personnummer help my case for "affiliation," or does the fact that I haven't lived there cancel it out?
-
Does having a full personnummer help my case for "affiliation," or does the fact that I haven't lived there cancel it out?
-
For those who were approved: What specific actions or evidence do you think were the deciding factors in proving your affiliation?
Any advice is appreciated!
